What is EnergyScout?
Technically, we are a Texas retail electricity broker (PUCT Certificate #BR220260). That means we do not sell any electricity - instead we make recommendations about which REP will give you the best deal.
How do you make money?
Right now, we don't! We source our plans from powertochoose.org. Soon, we will offer a rate monitoring service for a small fee. We're just getting up and running, but we will begin negotiating with REPs for referral fees.
Where can I learn more about buying electricity in Texas?
We highly recommend reading Power To Choose's FAQ (here ya go).
How can I contact you?
Send an email to contact@askenergyscout.com or message us on Facebook.
Why do you typically recommend longer term contracts?
First and foremost, multi-year contracts have typically been cheaper than 1 year contracts. In fact, for most of 2022, it would have been cheaper by hundreds of dollars to sign up for a 5 year contract and pay the cancellation fee after 12 months than to have signed up for a 12 month plan to begin with.
A longer contract also means more price protection while maintaining your right to cancel your current plan for a fee. Can you imagine how much money you'd be saving right now if you had locked in a 5 year electricity rate in 2020? Plus, if power prices return to 2020 levels now, you can pay a cancellation fee to get out of the long term rate.
Of course, this all depends on the size of the cancellation fee, your expected power consumption, the amount you'd save by cancelling - but this is all math and analysis we handle for you when making our recommendations.
